What is a passport?

1. What is a passport?

Passport is a book-like document issued by a competent authority of Vietnam to Vietnamese citizens who need to travel internationally.

So it can be said that a passport is an indispensable license, used for entry and exit and to prove nationality. In some cases, a passport is also used instead of an ID card or CCCD for the purpose of proving identity.

Each passport will have a passport number, which is a series of 8 characters: 1 uppercase letter and 7 natural numbers.

Example: B5028331.

2. Types of passports

There are 3 types of passports in Vietnam today:

  • Ordinary passport (green passport): The most popular type today, issued to most Vietnamese citizens for purposes such as tourism, studying abroad, working, etc.;
  • Official passport (jade green): Issued to subjects belonging to state administrative agencies to perform assigned tasks;
  • Diplomatic passport (red passport): Issued to high-ranking officials such as Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Secretaries, Deputy Secretaries, Provincial Chairmen… when working abroad.
